Stop Being So Uptight!

People have been changing for the past hundreds of years. Back in the day, it wasn't hard for a male figure to crack open the heart of a female. But as the years past by, things have changed. Many of these females had built up this giant wall that causing their family and friends to call them "cold hearted." Most of the time, females build up this wall because something happened to them in their past and this makes them close up inside. In the play "Taming of the Shrew," there was a very blunt character name Katherine who was a angry person. She did not want to get married and she always had an attitude to any man who disagreed with her. Someone so beautiful and yet so vicious. In the movie "Desperately Seeking Santa," the main character Jennifer is an ambitious young marketing guru who is very uptight about the holiday spirit. Jennifer cared too much about making sales on the holiday rather than spending Christmas with her family and friends. She had a harsh and cold hearted attitude towards anyone who doesn't agree with her. An angry woman is like an agitated fountain—muddy, unpleasant, lacking in beauty. These texts reflects that a person with a tough exterior can actually have a sweet interior because another sex has enter into his/her life.

Act II, Scene I. Line 203-225

Katherine: “Moved,” in good time. Let him that moved you hither

Remove you hence. I knew you at the first

You were a moveable."

Petruchio: "Come, come, you wasp. I' faith, you are too angry."

Katherine: If I be waspish, best beware my sting.

Petruchio: My remedy is then to pluck it out.

Katherine: Ay, if the fool could find it where it lies.

In this scene, Petruchio and Baptista just finished talking about Katherine being Petruchio's wife. Petruchio came up with a plan to woo her by being a sweet heart when she rants. As Petruchio exits, Katherine walks in. Right off the bat, Katherine was already having an attitude towards Petruchio even though all he said to her was good morning and that he heard she is known by Kate. She refuses to let him call her Kate because he has no business with her. Petruchio then began to try to charm Katherine by saying that she's the prettiest Kate in the world. “Moved,” in good time. Let him that moved you hither. Remove you hence. I knew you at the first. You were a moveable." In this quote, Katherine isn't try to hear anything from Petruchio and isn't willing to accept his "sweet" talking. As the conversation goes on, Petruchio states that Katherine are going back and forth with each other and he states that Katherine is too angry and she should lighten up.

Petruchio: Come, come, you wasp. I' faith, you are too angry.

Katherine: If I be waspish, best beware my sting.

Petruchio: My remedy is then to pluck it out.

Katherine: Ay, if the fool could find it where it lies.

But Katherine doesn't take that from him. She kind of plays him by saying "look out for my stinger." She insists Petruchio to let her go because she would make him angry is she stays. She then exits.

Desperately Seeking Santa

David: Yeah, I think we're all late for something.
Jennifer: You know, I think what I'm late for is more important than your little bike messenger delivery thing.
David: Are you always such a little sweet heart in the morning?
Jennifer: Only when I'm in front of a jerk like yourself.

In this scene, Jennifer and David had met at a coffee stand. She usually skips the line and gets her coffee without a problem, but not this time. David decided to say something to Jennifer because he felt like it wasn't fair. In the conversation, he misjudges where she came from because of her outfit and her attitude. Because of him misjudging her, she took it to the heart and kind of played him. They are pretty much going back and forth with each other throughout the scene.

David: Yeah, I think we're all late for something.
Jennifer: You know, I think what I'm late for is more important than your little bike messenger delivery thing.
David: Are you always such a little sweet heart in the morning?
Jennifer: Only when I'm in front of a jerk like yourself.

Just like Petruchio and Katherine, David and Jennifer are talking back to one another. David's intention is to loosen Jennifer up but Jennifer is too tough for that right now. David has this look on his face where he doesn't understand why she has such an attitude early in the morning but he soon finds out why.

Act V, Scene II. Line 152-196

Katherine:
Fie, fie! Unknit that threat'ning unkind brow
And dart not scornful glances from those eyes
To wound thy lord, thy king, thy governor.
It blots thy beauty as frosts do bite the meads,
Confounds thy fame as whirlwinds shake fair buds,
And in no sense is meet or amiable.
A woman moved is like a fountain troubled,
Muddy, ill-seeming, thick, bereft of beauty,
And while it is so, none so dry or thirsty
Will deign to sip or touch one drop of it.
Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee,
And for thy maintenance commits his body
To painful labor both by sea and land,
To watch the night in storms, the day in cold,
Whilst thou liest warm at home, secure and safe,
And craves no other tribute at thy hands
But love, fair looks and true obedience—
Too little payment for so great a debt.
Such duty as the subject owes the prince,
Even such a woman oweth to her husband.
And when she is froward, peevish, sullen, sour,
And not obedient to his honest will,
What is she but a foul contending rebel
And graceless traitor to her loving lord?
I am ashamed that women are so simple
To offer war where they should kneel for peace;
Or seek for rule, supremacy and sway
When they are bound to serve, love, and obey.
Why are our bodies soft and weak and smooth,
Unapt to toil and trouble in the world,
But that our soft conditions and our hearts
Should well agree with our external parts?
Come, come, you froward and unable worms!
My mind hath been as big as one of yours,
My heart as great, my reason haply more,
To bandy word for word and frown for frown.
But now I see our lances are but straws,
Our strength as weak, our weakness past compare,
That seeming to be most which we indeed least are.
Then vail your stomachs, for it is no boot,
And place your hands below your husband’s foot:
In token of which duty, if he please,
My hand is ready, may it do him ease.
Why, there’s a wench! Come on and kiss me, Kate.
They kiss

In this scene, they were at a wedding banquet. Everyone is enjoying their time and Petruchio came up with this idea that whoever wife comes to their husband under the husband's command, they win. And most importantly, they would have
the most obedient wife. Two men name Lucentio and Hortensio decided to take up the deal. They both call their wives but the wives would not come so it was left to Petruchio. He sends a widow to get Katherine and surprisingly, she comes to his commands. She then makes a speech about how these wives should appreciate their husbands more often because their husbands is the reason why they have clothes on their back, food in their stomach, warmth in the cold, etc. Usually, Katherine is very mean and harsh towards Petruchio, but time changes and people change. She began to appreciate her husband even more than ever. She bagan to found love for Petruchio and changed her mind about him. At the end of the day, to show her appreciation, she kneels down to the ground and gives a kiss to Petruchio.
